Composite Gate Installation

A complete guide to your EnviroBuild composite gate installation for your new garden gate.

What Are Composite Gates?

Composite residential gates are durable, low-maintenance gates made from a blend of recycled wood fibres and plastic. This combination creates a material that mimics the natural look of wood but is far more resistant to issues like rot, warping, and fading, even in harsh weather. Composite gates offer a sustainable option for homeowners and businesses, as they’re often made from recycled materials, helping reduce waste. Composite gate installation is also fairly simple.
Available in a variety of colours and styles, composite gates can suit both traditional and modern properties, blending seamlessly with other composite fencing or existing fencing systems. Their strength, aesthetic appeal, and longevity make them an increasingly popular choice for garden, driveway, and perimeter gates.

Composite Gate Installation Guide for New Gates

Step 1: Unpack and Check Items Prior to Your Composite Gate Installation

For the first step of the composite gate installation, unpack your gate kit and confirm that all components are included.

Step 2: Prepare and Install Posts for Your Composite Gate Installation

Secure your posts in place using a 1.6m ground anchor steel pole, ensuring a minimum gap of 875mm between them (860mm for the gate, 5mm for the latch, and at least a 10mm gap near the hinge, which can be adjusted if needed).

Step 3: Choose Gate Opening Direction Before Your Composite Gate Installation

Decide the direction for the gate to open, which will determine hinge and latch placement. The latch’s curved edge should face the post it will latch onto. To change the latch direction, unscrew and remove the lock from Frame B, rotate the latch 180 degrees, and ensure it locks back into place.

Step 4: Attach L Brackets to Frame for the Composite Gate Installation

Attach an L bracket to each end of one Aluminium Frame A using Screw D.

Step 5: Connect Frame Sides to Bottom Frame

For the fifth step of the composite gate installation, slide the bottom ends of Aluminium Frames B and C over the Frame A section with attached L brackets. Align the holes and secure them with Screw D, creating a connected bottom and side frame (leave the top frame off for now).

Step 6: Insert Fence Panels for Composite Gate Installation

Cut the fence panels to fit (720mm) and slide all 10 panels into the gate frame from the top.

Step 7: Attach the Top Frame

Insert the second Aluminium Frame A into the top of the gate and secure with Screw D, aligning it with the L brackets.

Step 8: Attach Hinges

On the side opposite the lock, align Hinge Part A with the top and bottom joins between fence panels. Attach each Hinge Part A with four Screw E and washers.

Step 9: Position the Gate for Hanging During Composite Gate Installation

Measure the desired height for the gate, accounting for any gaps at the top or bottom. Mark where Hinge Part B will attach to the post.

Step 10: Install Hinge Part B

Attach Hinge Part B's L-plate to the post corner. For the top hinge, use four Screw A; for the bottom hinge, secure with two Screw A on the shorter L face and two Screw E on the wider face to accommodate the ground anchor. Please note, if attaching to a non-composite post, use screws suited to the material. Slide the gate onto Hinge Part A and tighten the adjusting rod nuts to achieve the desired spacing.

Step 11: Install the Lock and Handles for the Composite Gate Installation

Insert the spindle and key barrel through the inside handle (ensure the key slot faces away from the handle). Slide through the pre-drilled gate holes, secure the lock mechanism with Screw C, and attach the second handle using two Screw B.

Step 12: Install the Striker Plate for the Composite Gate Installation

Align and mark the striker plate position on the post for the last step in the composite gate installation. Attach it with appropriate screws, then remove the plate to create a recess with a drill or chisel. Reattach the plate, ensuring a snug fit for the lock.
